Help me diagnose tranny issue
Hey guys, I posted about this earlier but maybe I need to go a little more in depth.
I got my truck back from my mechanic on Saturday. One of the things I had him look at was a transmission fluid leak. A while later he called me and said that the tranny was overfilled by 3 quarts, and it was just spilling out of a vent and getting all over everything. He changed the fluid, and filled it to the correct level.
Well, as soon as I get the truck back it started acting up, and my mechanic said he noticed this too. It doesn't want to get into gear on a cold start, and in the first while of driving it it will kick out of gear quite a few times. Usually at lower speeds, like at a stoplight. I just put my foot on the brake and give it a little bit of gas and I can feel it jerk when it gets back in gear. It will pop out occasionally when going at lower speeds, like 10 to 15 MPH.
So my guess is that the dealer (thats what I get from buying from a dealer, right?) had overfilled the transmission in order to "correct" (yeah right) this problem. It never did that before when it was overfilled, but at the normal level it does.
Once the tranny is warmed up, it seems to work fine for the rest of the day.
Any input on that?
Second, I think I have another problem. In 3rd gear I really seem to have a ton of "slip" (I'm not sure if that is it or not) in the tranny. First gear pulls really strong, and when I put the hammer down at about 65 it pulls great too. But possibly second and definately 3rd feel really "loose". If I put my foot on the floor in these gears it will rev way up, to around 2300RPM and increase speed very slowly. I was literally getting out accelerated on an uphill on-ramp by a Fedex truck before I hit 4th gear.
So whats up with it? I've heard something about some bands that may need to be adjusted, but I really don't know much about what all needs to be done.
