hard cold start
hard cold start
my truck recently began having a problem starting. it only happens after the truck has been sitting for at least 2-3 hours. it starts immediately when the engine is warm.

if i crank for long enuf while pumping the throttle (not sure if the pumping helps) it will start. also, it seems to have the problem more when i've parked facing uphill, but today it happened on level ground.

the truck only has 69K miles on it. am i looking at a bad lift pump or something else?

thanks.

Check rubber fuel lines going to and from pump.
They are at the back of pump going down towards the frame
Get ready to cuss a little if you have to replace them.

: Eddie : 8)
Re:hard cold start
The fuel lines could be the problem and is a common replacement item after about three years use with ones from factory. Use the manual pump operations on your lift pump to get firm pressure on the pump bulb/rubber button after sitting overnight. If this corrects your starting problem, the lines would be the first think to check. Look for cracks, dampness on lines or tiny leaks. You can have a line problem without a big visible leak. A failing line can allow air in causing fuel drain back even though you don't have visible leaking.
Re:hard cold start
i checked the rubber lines i could find and they look relatively new with the exception of the line from the fuel heater to the lift pump. i found 3...the one mentioned above and 2 that run down the firewall and back toward the tank. are there any others i'm misssing?

i guess i'll replace all 3 this weekend to be on the safe side. from the positioning of the lines, i can see where you're right about the cussing, bulthisl.

is there anything else i should check besides the lines?

Re:hard cold start
No but the 2 lines are not the same size.
The supply line is 3/8 and the return is 5/16.
Make sure you get the right type hose that is compatible with #2 [ diesel ].
I used a line from NAPA. It is called a pressure line I think. It's used alot around here for tranny lines.
It is rubber and has a cloth braid around it. It was about $3 per ft.
Or better yet if you can find them steel braided would be even better.
You won't want to do this more than once.
If that's not the prob. I'm sure we can figure it out.

Keep us posted.

: Eddie : 8)

Ok, nothiing like bringin up a dead thread!! My truck is hard start after sitting for a couple of days, so i am thinking that this is the problem also. Could somebody shoot me a pic or description of the lift pump so i know what to look for to prime. I am pretty sure this is my problem, it is fine overnight, but i let it sit all weekend and it takes cranking and pumping the pedal like mad to get it to fire. Thanks in advance.
