fueling problem?
fueling problem?
i get a stuttering just off idle (1000-1500) at any speed. it gets worse with load.... i was plowing the other day and it almost quit on me didnt even have much snow in my blade just it being down. it also has been getting worse with time. i noticed it about 3 weeks ago but it wasnt much...and didnt think ne thing of it. please help...the longer my truck is down the more $$$ i loose.
Does it start right up in the mornings? If it wants to stumble some then smooths out, Look at the top of the fuel filter where the wiring for the preheater enters the top and see if it is wet from fuel and or the rubber is deteriorated. If so you are probably sucking some air when you accelerate.

This is worth a try. Put a quart of 2 stroke oil in the fuel tank. Drive it around for 15 or 20 miles and see if it straightens out some or completely then you know it is in the injection pump. It may be gone for good with an occasional dose of 2 t oil or you may need to replace the pump. It will cost a few dollars to try it. I have done this with a few diesels in the past and it does work if it is the pump or an injector.
so...i havent gotten to try n e thing yet...no extra $$$$, not even a few bucks. but i figured i would tell you that the starting good was with it being plugged in. the other day i forgot to plug my truck in and...well wasnt good. had to cycle the GH like 4 times and still wouldnt run with out me holding the peddle down. lots and lots of smoke!!!! thanx for all the stuff so far
I know you won't like this but trying to fix something with 0 money is hard to do. Here is something that will not cost anything. To check if it is the overflow valve pinch the rubber return fuel line closed and see if it smooths out, if so it is the overflow valve. You can take the valve apart and gently streach the spring some and put it back together and it will work for a while.
Personally I think your fuel filter is pluged. After you test the overflow valve if it is not that then I would go get a filter and install it and also clean the screen in the fuel preheater. A filter will cost about $25 if you check around. If that does not fix it then you need to install a fuel pressure gauge. It could be a bad lift pump or an air leak, or a bad injection pump.
I had your same symtoms with my truck and it was just the filter needed changing. Believe it or not my truck ran fine at speed but was hard to start, white smoke and stumbling and missing at idel and low speed. You need to start somewhere, so start with the simple possibilities and progress from there. Putting some 2 stroke oil in the fuel is a good idea to extend the life of your fuel components, these trucks were not made to run on this diesel fuel they sell now so we need to help it along.
PS do not leave your return line pinched off to run around, your injection pump needs the fuel flow to keep it cool and lubed. That might go without saying but I figured I should be clear.

thank you very much. the lift pump was replace about a year and a half ago by the man i bought the truck from...well he payed a shop that didnt do a good job(the hose from the lift pump to the heater was kinked...so i had to make it fit). i will try that tomorrow....well latter today.
its the feed. so i have another question. what can leek form the side of the injection pump? when i was looking at it the other day i saw the side was wet...it may be just from my oil dipstick that drips couse of a bad o-ring. but if its not what else can it be.
Best way to determine when to change your fuel filter is to install a fuel pressure gauge. Just eliminating two needless filter changes based on mileage or months alone will easily pay for a gauge that is handy to have.
I don't change my filter until fuel pressure at highway cruising speed drop 3-5 psi. I usually can go 30-50k miles between changes.
