fuel strainer

Could anyone help me to obtain the diagram(s) of the fuel strainer that sits just in front of my lift pump/primer on a 1994. I'm trying to understand how it works and what the electrical connections are for.

If the fuel strainer is unplugged will the engine die?

If it is just a pre filter or fuel strainer to catch any big "chunks" before they go to the fuel filter, why is there an electrical connection into the side of the strainer that pigtails up to a heating element that mounts to the top? Is there other elements inside the assembly?

It's just a heating element in there to warm up the fuel. Nothing but that and the prefilter.

No the engine won't die if you disconnect. It will just prevent the fuel from getting warmed when it's cold out if unplugged.

The wires are also a fairly common source for air entering the fuel system, so just a heads up if you run into problems with air entering the system (just one of the potential sources).

This may help: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/filter/pre-filt_clean.htm

I guess my thermostat which is mounted on top of the assembly is what burned up. I am going to order the replacement cable harness from cummins. Does the heating element fail often and is there any way I can test the heating element to determine if it is working without the thermostat that controls it in working order?
