Fuel Shut Off Solenoid burnt up

My truck died and after looking under the hood, I found the fuel shut off solenoid had fried. I am replacing it but my concern is to why it burnt up. Could a short cause this or just wear. Do I need to check relays or wires.
Thanks
Stacey

Yup new contacts and get the diode from fosters to prevent the solenoid from getting fried again. Mine hsa been sitting on the bench for a couple weeks now just need to crawl under and install it on the starter.
