Fuel Shut-off Solenoid

I had a quick question.....I just replaced my starter on the truck and for some reason it just turns over and wont start. Now fostertruck.com says that if the starter sticks you will damage the fuel shut-off solenoid....My question is how can you tell if it's damaged or not??? I really don't want to go out and spend 200 dollars on a new fuel solenoid? Oh a another question....What are those wires that are connected to the negitive end on the right hand battery? For some reason when I go to start the truck they start smoking and become hot to the touch. Sorry for the long post guys (or gals) But I really need some help. Thats why I'm a Noobie!

Thanks for any replies

Turn the key on and pull the arm on the soneniod up if it says up try and start it. If it dosen't stay up could be bad or a bad relay. Somebody else will have to comment on the ground wires.

Partsman gave you some good info about the solenoid. A lot of them are replaced unnecessarily, cause the truck won't start. The relay wire on the left battery positive post may be the actual problem. Mine corroded bad. I took it off and re-terminated it, then moved it to the power bus so it wouldn't corrode anymore. I've made this mod to a few customers' trucks, too.
Your battery cables/wires are smoking cause they're corroded and have a poor connection. They will stop- when they burn off!! :'( Take that stuff apart and clean it all up good, then coat with battery terminal grease. You'll be glad you did! 8)
