Fuel Guage not working correctly.

My guage sometimes drops to empty and then comes back up for no reason same with my oil pressure guage but that will be fixed soon., light and dinging occour and drive me crazy. Where do I start to look for the fuel guage problem ? I have heard of level floats breaking up and dissolving but don't think thats it. Could it be the sending unit ? Any ideas without dropping the tank . This is on my 98 12V . Thanks

I had similar issue on my 96. I took it to the shop to get the A/C fixed and told them to fix this as well. My mechanic told me there was a junction box at the front driver side fender where the wires come from the sending unit. He said they had to clean all the connections and put dielectric grease on the connectors. IIRC he told me he had straight wire one or two wires. Sorry Im not 100% sure on this, but hopefully it may give you a starting point. TM

its probably the sending unit in the tank, ive replaced several at work as well as the one on my '98. run it real low on fuel, drop the tank and swap it out. its not that hard, just kinda sucks that you have to drop the tank. you might as well clean the screen in the tank while your in there.

IIRC the sending unit is ~$40 from mother mopar.

I agree...fuel sending unit. Had to change it on my 97 and my Dad's 98. $40 is about the price as well. Real easy to change.

I did replace the sending unit on mine, before I took it in to the shop for the A/C repair, so if the sending unit doesnt fix it, I would try my previous suggestions. TM

same problem & solution on my 98 12v. looking back, I wonder if it would have been easier to raise the bed & replace the sending unit that way?

i just pulled my tank tonight, it only took me about a half an hour, being that iam lucky enough to have a lift at my house and i used a tranny jack worked great! now i just need to test the sending unit before i buy new.

where would you recommend getting a new one if that is the case and how much will i expect to spend? thanks alot

hi
look closely at the sending unit .
i t has 2 or 3 contact points and if you gently bend thm to have a constant contact through full sweep the gauge will work .
fixed mine 1.5 years back and no prob so far !
saved that $60.00 for fuel !
