fuel gage intermittant

The fuel gage in my 98 Ram 2500 CTD is intermittant. It is on and seems to be reading just fine, then turns off for a minute or so, then back on.

Any ideas?

It wouldn't be so bad but the chime for low fuel is driving me nuts!

Common problem, the tank sender has failed. All you need is the $35 sender from the dealer p/n 4797738, not the entire $300 module many will try to sell you.
Straight forward job to replace, biggest problem is you need to tilt the bed up or drop the tank to get at the top of the tank.
I perfer tilting the bed, just loosen the three bolts that hold down the pass side bed and remove the three from the diver's side. Remove the fill and vent hoses from the tank and tilt the bed up and support it well. The bed can be tilted with two people, a jack or overhead comealong.

You will need a strap or chain wrench or large water pump pliers to remove the module hold down nut.

infidel great to know, mine started doing this about a year ago and i've just lived with it, ok when full, but after the tank drops to half it cycles back and forth, looks like I've found a new sight to hang out on.

I had one put in about a year ago and the mechanic that installed it said that I would probably need another in less than 50K. I know that the original owner of the truck had it replaced once as well. Doesn't say much for oem parts.

As an FYI, on my 96 longbed, there were actually 4 bolts per side holding the bed down. I undid three, and just couldn't figure out why it didn't want to lift until I found the 4th!
