Cool Frustrated newbie

Hi, new here to DTR. Bought a 95 standard cab 2500 Cummins back in Febuary with 37,000 miles on it! My first deisel, and its been 10+ years since i have had an Auto trans. Anyway, the truck had sat for a while, so it needed batteries, fluids etc. Nice clean truck, BUT ..... something hasn't been right since i got it.

It wasn't getting the power i thought it should, and would rev to 2100 and sit there (slipping?) until i let up, then it would slowly build speed in first and second. Once it got into third and forth, it would pull like a train! I had bigger injectors installed, a K&N in stock (drilled) box, tranny flushed and filters etc. Some improvement, but still doing weird shifting stuff. So i took it last week to the local tranny shop (most of the guys there drive dodges) and they said it was out of adjustment. I left it, they got it to "hook up" better, but now i'm not getting WOT! They also quoted a new converter and trans rebuild at around $3000 with syn fluids and all, but they also said there wasn't anything "wrong" with mine.

I have read some of the posts here, and i suspect the TPS is the problem, but the last thread was several years old, so i'm wondering what is available now. I am new to this engine trans combo, so please limit abbreviations in answers until i figure them out!

I am mechanically inclined, but also need this truck for work every day, so will probably have it worked on by a shop. Looking for shop suggestions in the Lewistown/ Spokane area. I am trying to get on NW bombers, but they aren't accepting my e-mail adresses for some reason, if anyone from there can help... Dealer ????

I don't mind spending some $, but want to deal with getting it right from the start, before doing any big mods, then the best value for the buck. Exhaust is still good, so i'll probably wait a few on that, i don't know if there are chip/ flash upgrades, or what the basic adjustments that need to be done might be, and i rather get advice from those of you who have been there, done that, then just swapping parts until something works!

The truck is a 4x4, auto, standard cab etc. 12v mostly stock, but just not getting the power i think it should have, and i don't like getting passed by Subarus going up grades if i don't get into the lock-up at the bottom. I also don't want lots of smoke or long term durability issues. I do some towing, trailers from 2500# to 7000#, maybe more in the future.

No plans to race/ dyno/ pulling contests etc. Just a tire burning daily driver that is worthy of the Cummins name!

If i can figure it out, i'll post photos soon. Thanks in advance for all your advice. Mike

PS. there are some threads from a few years back about TPS mods and other common issues. If you don't want to repeat it all here, please just PM me at my e-mail, mikeyc66@yahoo.com

'95 autos are notorious for being powerless stock. I think that's all you're feeling.
For a start put in some gauges, slide the stock plate forward and block the signal flow to the turbo wastegate. Change the fuel filter.
That will wake it up!
Later on replace the stock exhaust system with a larger one with a freer flowing muffler and without the cat. Modify the stock plate or replace with a different one.
There's enough info here to keep you reading for a long time http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

If your going to start pumping up the power you should at least put in an after market valve body. This will help your stock tranny for awhile. But if your going to really start to pump up the power you will need to upgrade your tranny and torque converter when the stock one finally lets go. I would also recommend doing searches on some of the parts you want to upgrade. You will see what others have used and what worked for them. you have got a great truck. It is 12v with low millage.you will grow to love this truck.

Hi Mikey,

If your truck has sat that much you may have TPS issues. First, can you operate a digital volt meter or an analog volt meter? That is key to diagnosing a TPS. There is an adjustment procedure to get the TPS to work properly with your computer.

Second, don't let anyone tell you the 160 HP pump wont make power. I made 309/751 at the rear wheel and have never had the pump off the truck. All bolt on parts too.

When we get the trans working properly, we will talk about gauges and why you need them now. Learning to read your gauges and learning to make your truck do what you want to will certainly add to your enjoyment of owning and driving and working your truck.

Feel free to PM me if you like. Let me know about working a volt meter and we will go from there.

Ronnie

oops

Ok, so i feel kinda dumb, but I was playing around under the hood saturday, and i noticed the throttle linkage was loose, i played with it and it fell out! It had come loose, and had been slowly getting longer, limiting full throttle! hahaaha I tightened her back up, and what do you know! POWER
Funny thing is, i had mentioned it to all three of the places i had taken the truck too...... "it looks loose or something.." they never checked. So either i'm still looking for a mechanic, or i'm doing it myself. Anyway, now i have some $ to play with... The tranny still doesnt want to **** 1-2 under full throttle, but the guys at the shop that worked on it last week told me to bring it back in tommorow. I am thinking gauges first?

Thanks for now! Mike

I don't know if this covers 95's, but there was a throttle cable recall, #970, if I remember correctly. Get your VIN#, call the dealer and see if the recall applies to you or if the truck has had the service. Could help in the long run.
