Cool Frozen in Oklahoma

Got up this a.m. -17 below zero, truck was plugged in. Started right up, no problem, took my wife to work and about 16 miles later she died. No, not my wife the truck. '96 3500 with lots of work. Diesel gelled on me at 65mph and 7 hrs later and lots of work I got her running again. Any suggestions on how to prevent this nightmare from happening again??

Thanks for the info...

Are you adding anything? Several fuel additives on the market. I use stuff from Wally world with "so far" good results.

Well, I dose mine like 3X more than the recommended dosage of white bottle Power Service, so far, so good. As a matter of fact, i was going to top my tank again this afternoon just to make sure I didn't get hung up somewhere without a full tank, and my normal places, diesel pump is frozen up, they wouldn't say if it was their diesel or the pump, but only that pump ( not even their kero pump was frozen up )

I am probably going to throw a couple of gallons of gasoline in mine tonight, just for double extra protection.

Power service in the white bottle when filling up. I also keep a spare fuel filter and a bottle of power service 911 under the back seat..

Bad idea! Gasoline ruins the lubricating properties of the fuel you don't EVER want to put gas in your tank. The proper thing to use is Kerosene, that is how they make the winter blend fuel and the reason that kerosene pump wasn't froze up.

That's the best bet, but in a pinch gasoline will work. I'd throw in a quart of 2 cycle oil or whatever other oil is laying around for lubricity.

I always try to buy non biodiesel and even though our fuel is supplied for the current weather I still add some additive when -20ish and always carry a bottle of 911, only once had a problem on a tractor at -35c.

I wouldn't do it at all in a common rail...of course a 12 valve would be less hazardous

Go back and put some of that kerosene in it. Or #1 if you can find it.

Is your fuel heater working? As for gas in the diesel. NO, not even our P7100's can handle todays dry S15 fuels with any gas added. double dose of power service is all you need.

All it's doing is costing you 3X more money.
I talked to a Power Service rep years ago who told me there was no advantage in using more than the recommended dosage.

You are probably right, but for the little cost, I like the way I sleep at night.

Our local "experts" on Diesel additives have left many owners setting on the side of the road this year....... When the pump that you fill from freezes up, you know you are in trouble.

So my bottle only lasts for 4 tanks....... I am tickled that I don't have to break out the Howes 911 like my buddies have had to this year.

while its not sub zero here I did put diesel in 3 glass jars and put em in the freezer at -5F Oregon B5 blend Gelled to a haze. Strait S15 non bio from Washington state stayed a liquid. B99 from our local pump looked like a citronella candle and was a complete solid.
