Front oil seal

Howdy All,
I am asking about a Dodge 2500 my buddy is looking at. I drive a PSD so bear with me on the lack of knowledge (like, am I even posting this in the right area).
He is loooking at buying a 01 Cummins 4X4 with 169K miles for 6500.00. Repo man is on the way and this guy is letting it go for payoff. Anyway, he claims that the only thing wrong mechanically is a front oil seal leak. According to the seller it costs about 450.00 to fix at a local shop. Does this sound right? Also, when buying a Cummins what else should he look for that tend to go wrong on these trucks.
Thanks for y'alls time with this.
Craig

If it really is the front seal it costs about $50 in parts and about two easy hours of your time.

Does the '01 engine have the KDP problem? I'm real suspicious of front oil leaks on these Cummins engines.
I would look real close at that leak. At $6500.00 it's probably a good deal.

The KDP is a problem '01s don't have.

Hmm, front Oil Seal, where is that exactly?

My '98 leaks pretty good on the front side...leaks on the ground below the trackbar / serpentine belt area.

It's behind the harmonic dampener, the lowest pulley on the engine.

The front seal gets replaced when you tab the KDP, which you should do anyways. Buy a kit from these guys http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...PROD&ProdID=64

Their instructions http://www.tstproducts.com/DowelPina.pdf

I already did the KDP fix, we presurized it when we drilled/tapped to blow the shavings out of the hole. We used one he'd already taken off another block to map where to drill/insert the bolt.

Yes

Dan, it sounds like you used a jig to contain the KDP. No problem with that, it's just that the procedure for the tab method to contain the dowel pin is exactly the same as changing the front seal minus just the tab washer.

Howdy All,
I started this thread a couple of weeks ago when my buddy thought he might by the Dodge in the first post (see above). He was under the impression that it had a front oil seal leak, however, he took it to a carwash and degreased the underside of the truck. He reports that the leak is coming from a silver piece of equipment mounted off to the side (I will have a picture of it tomorrow),
to the side of the oil pan / block. Can y'all tell me what this is or might be without seeing a picture of it first? Is it an oil pump? What is involved in fixing the leak? Is this a gasket failure or a mechanical part failure.
Thanks again for your time,
Craig

Craig, you need to be more specific.
Which side of the engine, front or back?
