Friend just bought a 95 12v Auto with a Pac brake, need some questions answered

My fried just bought a real clean rust free 95 12v with an auto and a Pac exhaust brake. This is his first diesel and this is my first expierience with a exhaust brake. I dont know if the valve springs have been upgraded in it or not, is there an easy way to check? I am not sure what if anything has been done to the tranny, ie different converter or not. I did not see a lock up switch for the TC, but need to look a little more. I think that this was either installed by a dealer or by cummins. The guy he bought it off of is an older gentlemen, so i dont think he isntalled it. What are some DO NOTS of running the exhaust brake so i can tell him because i know he is going to want to play with it. Thanks for the insight

If I remember right the 60 lbs springs have a white stripe painted on them. No real does and don't s. Use it for faster warm ups.

I have heard/read that you should only use the exhaust brake when the TC is locked up, thus it wont build up as much heat. Not sure if the truck has a TC lockup switch though, the exhaust brake button is located next to the OD on/off switch. Thanks

If it does not have the 60lb springs it probably has the 35lb brake on it

it won't slow the truck down at all if the tc isn't locked. it will make a bunch of noise, but if it's not locked there is nothing to make the truck slow down.

Thats what i found out, if the TC is not locked up, it is pretty much useless. My friend drove the truck and then called me up and said, the Exhaust brake does not work, i told him it did, i said i tried it and it worked. I told him the TC needs to be locked for it to work properly or he is just going to create alot of heat if it is not locked. Going to wire up a TC lockup swith for him.
