Fleetguard oil filter #?
Fleetguard oil filter #?
I've been using Wix filters on my truck since I got it. What is the correct oil filter #? This site lists several: http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/96specs.html. I want to be sure I get the correct one.
Wix are good filters , Napa Gold are Wix filters .
Any of the ones listed on that site are good , but you may pay too much if you go to dodge to buy .
My understanding is that the Cummins & Fleetgaurd are the same , the difference between those #s is the filter media , paper , fiber glass , & maybe the micron rating .
Now to see if someone comes up with more info .

LF3894 is best (stratapore)
LF3959 is ok too (celulose)
Rule of thumb, you can always go up on year. You can't go down.
In other words, you can put an 03 filter on a 98. A 99 on a 96. But you can't put a 97 on an 02 application wise.
Never use FRAM! The vibration can destroy the internal filter causing it to lodge in there blocking off oil flow.

I just put a Fleetgaurd LF3894 on mine. I actually called Cummins when I saw the 3894 was listed for the 24 valves but not the 12 valves on some internet stores. I called them because I thought I remembered someone saying you can use it on the 12 valves, but, I became concerned when I didn't see it listed for sale in 12 valve oil filter sections of their sites. Anyways, Cummins said it works and they recommend it over the others.
OOO...not a good idea to use on 24v engines. Continuous oil pressure is too high on 24v engines compared to 12v's and this filter does not meet the spec.
A good rule of thumb: You can use the very best filtration media Fleetguard has to offer with the 3894 and it will meet the specs for ANY CTD of any year in a Dodge.

16035 is exactly the same as the 3894 other than the bottom of the canister on the 16035 is fluted to accept a filter socket. Case thickness and internals are identical and they both use the Stratapore media. The 16035 can also be used on every CTD in a Dodge if you feel you need the help of a filter socket to remove the filter.
I use 3894's on everything as I have never needed a socket to remove the filter and I'm not willing to pay the extra couple of bucks for something I don't use.
