First time diesel Questions ??
I'd advance the pump timing and slide the plate. Those are very mild mods that enhance fuel mileage and throttle response along with power. When I did the equivalent to my 1993 truck I was mad that I hadn't done it earlier, and I was doing 99% city driving.

If the timing is advanced too much it can blow the head gasket.
15.5 to 16.0 degrees seems to be the most common advance people set their timing to. The thing to keep in mind is that the P7100 pump uses static timing--that is, whatever the timing advance is at 1000 rpm, it's the same at 3000 rpm. So you want to advance the timing to whatever's optimal for the rpm you want it to run most efficiently (typically highway cruise rpm). The stock timing is apparently best for about 1400 rpm, and 15.5 - 16 degrees is best for around 1800 from what I've read.
Downsides to sliding the plate really comes down to EGT. With full throttle it might be possible to take EGT too high and maybe melt through a piston. I have much more experience with 24v trucks, so hopefully the more knowledgeable 12v guys can pitch in here.

You're only gonna melt something if you hold your EGT's too high for too long. 1250 is the accepted number for max sustained temp. Higher than that for short blasts won't hurt anything. I've gone to around 2000 degrees several times in my dually, and 1700-1800 in my 12v. All those are guesses, as the gauge stops at 1600.
Do a search for AFC tuning, you can adjust the fueling to how it suits you and your driving. Push the plate forward, grind a different profile into it, or pull it out entirely. The plate simply sets max fuel limits, at half throttle, your truck will still have the same power it did before. Adjusting the plate can be done in less than two minutes, so nothing is permanent. Same with AFC tuning. The only thing that isn't easily adjusted is the timing, thats about a 45-60 minute job for a truck that has accurate TDC marks and someone who knows what they are doing.

Thats what the AFC is for, it controls your fuel in relation to boost pressure. You can make it smoke if you want, or you can have it smoke free. It won't have th acceleration of a smokey truck, but that isn't always the goal either.
Smoke is just a sign of unburned fuel. It's a waste of fuel. We actually have to be careful of smoke these days--the environmental wacko's are just looking for reasons to try to ban what they call "overpowered pickup trucks".
If you are looking for smoke on occasion, you will have to be regulating with your right foot the rest of the time. Unless you get out and adjust your AFC whenever the urge hits you.
