Smile A few Driveline questions ...?

Hi Guys
I pic up my new to me 1996 2wd 2500 diesel today , I am going to do some preventive maintance . The truck is super clean to start , I was wondering about the rear axles in the 2500's are they dana's in the 2wd trucks and what ratio's were used that year ...it's a auto trans .
I will also proibly do the U-joints ...any know if they used a center bearing on the extended trucks ...I forgot to look .
I will do all the fluids and check the front wheel bearings ... I will repack them for piece of mine .
Thanks Guys
Greg

Yes, all 2nd gens used Dana axles.....your 96 2WD auto will have a D70 rear with 3.54's standard and 4.10's as an option. A Club cab long box truck will have a driveshaft hanger bearing. Congratulations!!

Yes and with the carrier bearing you need to know a lot of info. You will be better off taking out your old one to compare it to the new. There are at least 3 different types for that truck. Most auto parts stores have 1 or 2 in stock but the one for my 95 is a dealer only item $$$$. there are different diameters of shafts and a slip joint type rear shaft. I would assume all diesels will be the largest diameter shaft but who knows.... the guys at the parts stores sure don't. But a quick way to tell will be look up at it, can you see the 2 mounting bolts on each side of it or are they bolted from the top where you cannot see the 2 bolts? If so and you can see 4 bolts that hold a "spacer" from the frame to the carrier bearing it is dealer only. I was going to change mine also but after finding this out I decided not to, it doesn't have much movement anyway. And if I do change it I was going to get the one from the parts store with the same diameter and make a mount to bolt it up myself, that will block off access to the gas tank strap support bolt but it will be easy to remove if I take off my "new" bracket to access it.(if I ever need to)
