The 4WD light is off, but when you turn, you can feel that back & forth motion in the steering wheel.
It comes & goes, not too often. Is that what's going on?
thanks

Even if the axle stays locked in, and the transfer case is shifted out, there should not be any front axle pull on corners. However, jack up one front wheel and spin it and see if the driveshaft turns. If not, then check your transfer case to make sure it is shifting out of gear.
My bet is that it is not the 4X4 at all, but I would check the track bar attachment to the frame. You cannot miss it, it looks like a cheap tie rod end, and when they get ready to drop off and let the front end go its own direction, that "death" wobble becomes apparent. Let it go with a loose track bar end, and you will find out why it is called a death wobble!
If by chance your 96 is a 3500, also check the upper front spring seats. They crack and will let the front springs shift around in turns. Dodge should repair the spring seats under their recall/TSB on that issue.

also check the front u-joints. when they get bad they don't like to bed very easy. When ever mine starts to do that I just check the u-joints and that has always been the problem for me.

Mine does the same thing, part of it is a loose track bar, and the other part is I need to get my tires balanced.
BTW, do the spring reinforcement anyway, it can't help, especially with the wait of the Cummins! The dealer will do it for free, but you need to take it to a dealer with a certified welder.
