excessive smoke

hi guys im new to the whole diesel thing and just picked up a 1997 3500 4x4 for next to nothing and its got a few issues that i need some input on. First off it has a boost leak that i can hear but i haven't gone looking for the source yet.

To me it seems like the truck blows an excessive amount of smoke. Anything over 1/4 throttle and this truck will poor the black smoke. It doesn't have enough ***** to me to think someone modded it with a different fuel plate or anything, it also has stock exhaust still.

This may be related to the boost leak but im not sure yet. Basically im just looking for input on the smoke issue whether it be a tired motor or not just looking for a few cents worth of knowledge thanks.

Find the boost leak,it's most likely the cause of your smoke problem.
