engine swap- some questions

I am swapping a bad engine from a 97 215hp motor out. I have a friend who just wrecked his 91.5 intercooled truck, and if possible, I might use this as a replacement.

The way I read it from dodgeram.org, the top ring was 14 mm from the top of the piston in 1st gen motors. In 94, they moved the ring up to 8mm from top of the piston. For 215hp engines, they moved the top ring back down to 14 mm from top of piston. Am I correct in saying that essentially, these are the same block and rotating assembly? Any other differences?

Also, what differences are there in the heads? I heard that the older heads do not flow as well, but is performance that much worse? I am not building a 700hp truck, just a 400hp farm truck. What are the other differences? Is there a place on the older heads to bolt up the fuel filter?

Thanks,
John

The overvalved engines do not have a lobe on the cam for your lift pump. I understand that the block is pretty much the same.

His truck is a 12 valve, how would be an overvalved truck .

Yeah, the truck is a 91. I need to do this swap in a weekend since I am gone during the week (Sunday night through Friday night) and work Saturdays until 3. That is the reason for me keeping the head on the donor engine.
