engine strorage
engine strorage
A buddy of mine just got a 90 one ton w/ a cummins. The truck is junk but only has 150k on it. He eventualy wants to put this motor in a crew cab chevy but for now his wife says the truck must go. He will be pulling the engine and tranny and storing them in his shop. His question is: Is there anything special that needs to be done to the engine to store it for a long term? Will there be a problem w/ seals in the injector pump drying up? I sugested changing the oil and filter and running it for a while to get fresh oil through out. Anything else need done?

Just make sure all the open ports, fittings, etc. are capped/plugged as necessary. Don't forget about the breather tube. Try to store it somewhere dry and as temperature stable as possible.
Probably not a bad idea to spray a little engine paint at it as well once it's all stripped out of the truck and then perhaps coat the freshly painted engine with a grease-like substance such that moisture dosen't cause excess rust. Store it on a stand, covered, in a reasonably temperature stable place if possible. Be sure that mice and other critters cannot get inside (along with moisture, etc.) and wreak havoc in those cylinder bores!
96_12v, it will be stored inside a shop and as suggested above all holes will be plugged
I just hope I can talk him into starting the project before rust is an issue
Thanks for more ideas
