engine dies
engine dies
My 94 5sp with 84k has a problem. It quits running while under power and after a minute or so will start and away we go. I replaced the ff and cummins just replaced the fuel sending unit ( not enough vac). The problem persists. We made it from Ore to Oklahoma, but what a hassle. I found that if I fill the tank after every 100mi or so I don't have the trouble. I did repair the throttle linkage a few hundred miles ago prior to this trip and all seemed well. I am reluctant to take it to a dealer because I'm not sure they will find the problem. I already left $900 in wyoming.. Thanks Ken
Re:engine dies
Start with your fuel hoses, and replace them all with new ones. After a couple of years the old hoses get porus and allow air to leak causing the truck to lose its prime. Do not forget the hoses on top of the fuel tank between the tank and frame.

I assume your filters and the screen in the prefilter are clean, and all the seals are tight.

Check your overflow valve. If it is a one piece unit, get a new one from Cummins (not Dodge) and replace it. If it is the two piece unit, pull the small nut from the top and check the spring to be sure it is not broken. If it is, stretch it to get you by, and get a new valve when you can.

Also, for good measure, check to see that your fuel shutoff solenoid on the side of the injection pump is clean and not hanging up a bit. It has a slug inside the bellows that gets dirt and grease build-up. They get dirty and will sometimes just shut down or partially down and cut your power.
