engine brake

Has anyone tried to using the fuel cutoff solenoid for engine braking?
Could it be done?

Not sure if this would help slow the vehicle or not, but the big problem is that with a P7100 pump, the shutoff solenoid has a separate circuit to pull up the solenoid. Basically you wouldn't be able to simply switch power off and on to the solenoid with a toggle switch as you desire. You have to actually re-engage the starter to pull up the solenoid.

Pump doesn't use any fuel until close to idle anyways with foot off the pedal, i.e. downshifting.

US Gear uses one on there 12volt model engine brake I have one on a 2001
it needs a controller to lower power to the solenoid or it will burn up

If you turned off the fuel when going down hill, wouldn't the 17 to 1 compression slow down the vehicle or am I dreaming?
TIA

Without an exhaust brake it wouldn't do any more than letting off of the throttle.

You still have all the air thats now been compressed pushing back down on the piston. It acts as a spring. You'd need to vent it at close to TDC, like a jake brake, for that to be effective.

Exactly Diesels have no inherent retarding power which is why engine brakes and exhaust brakes exist for them. Think of a gasser, when you let off the throttle, the butterfly closes and that tends to give some retarding power. An exhaust brake on a diesel is a similar concept, only the butterfly is on the exhaust rather than the intake. Tate, I really like the 'spring' analogy

most all of the Exh Brake applications I see are for Standard trans only...do they not make one compatible with an Auto? I worked for fuso a few years back and all of their trucks auto and standard had them. i wud think all youd need to work out is how to lock up the TC to make it effective. with these trans' you may only be able to use them in 3rd and OD

PacBrake sells a auto tranny controller that locks the TC so their brakes work on an auto or a person can do it manually with a simple lockup switch.
