Technically the limit is 1250f but many stop pushing it before and even after it get to that temp.

The general unwritten rule on EGT's is no more than 1,300 degrees if the pyrometer probe is in the exhaust manifold and 1,000 degrees if the probe is in the downpipe AFTER the turbo.

You also have to consider how much you trust your gauge.
I try not to exceed 1100° for extended periods even though I've been told you can cruise at 1250° all day.

hi everyone,
sorry to hijack this thread..? but since we're discussing egt's...
is it necessary for me to have an egt guage installed? i rarely tow and if i do, it's limited to a small single axle trailer with a small 4 cylinder car on it..the size of a toyota corolla. the longest trip would be from the san francisco area to los angeles.
i have a '96 cummins ram 5 speed with 184k miles on it.
thanks!

lechon:

Let me start off by telling you "Welcome To DTR!" Glad to have you aboard as a Member.

You are not "hijacking the thread" either as your question is about a gauge with reference to EGT's so don't worry about that either! With reference to your question, I would tell you that I think a pyrometer is an important gauge to have, even if the truck is stock. The first thing I have done on all four (4) of my Dodge Cummins Diesel Pickups was to install a full set of gauges before I do anything else. But, that's me. The pyrometer is pretty easy to install and IMO gives you a good reference to engine heat to avoid damage to the engine.

Anyway, welcome aboard!

Hi John,
Thanks for the warm welcome and your tip on pyrometers. I will go ahead and have one installed on my truck.
