EGT temp questions
EGT temp questions
Hi all,

Looking for some knowledge here; I just got back from a 2200 mile trip for vacation. Pulling our 13k lb Tahoe Transport I would usually run about 800-900 deg Manifold temps at 70 MPH. On long climbs I would work very hard to keep things under 1100 and only for short bursts go to 1200 when passing or a very steep grade.

Am I being reasonable on these temps? Should I be trying to keep it lower? I thought the 8-900 for long periods would be okay but want to make sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don Miller
9700 LWB EC, #8 plate, Scotty II, 3k springs, 16 deg timing, 370 horse injectors, Custom Built TC, New Valve Body.

For reference: Mileage - into 25 mph head wind - 7 MPG
Cruising with trailer and no wind - 12 MPG

Overall trip average 9.8 MPG
Re:EGT temp questions
Hey there,

I too am seeing the same temps with my heavy camper. Although, I don't seem to get above 1150. And thats pushing almost against the governor a little. So, maybe your load dictates some of your temp.

I just want to know about the high cruising temps, like you, around 900 for long periods of time. Great question...... :-*

TJ

Re:EGT temp questions
Any thing under 1300* pre turbo EGT should be ok , I push 1250* on long upgrades offen without any troubles....you'll start gettin into trouble after 1350*
Re:EGT temp questions
I would think that with your timing at 16 those numbers are not too bad. Did you notice any rise in water temp while the EGTs were running 800-900?

Your setup looks like you have all the right pieces so I wouldn't be too concerned with the higher EGTs. I read somewhere that our engines could run at 1100 forever and not melt.
Re:EGT temp questions
You are running right where it should for maximum efficiency and power. Cummins likes them to not get over 900 degrees, but that is because the exhaust manifolds tend to burn out and warp if run on heavy pulls and high temps long enough.

If you are pulling heavy grades (Idaho has the White Bird Pass that comes to mind) figure on getting a ATS exhaust manifold at some time in the future.
