egt gauge issues?

alright well i was wandering if my egt gauge is off. with the key off there should be no power to it and i would think it should read 0 but it reads around 180*. i have the propbe after the turbo and i am reading around 6-7 hundred just cruising. i thought it would be lower even with the 370s. any input is appreciated. thanks baker.

The needle never goes down to 0, even with the engine off, so it sounds right. Depending on where you have the probe after the turbo, your temps sound reasonable. I'm usually at 7-8 crusing with the probe pre-turbo. However, I remember with my old truck that had the probe about 10 inches down on the downpipe, it would hardly go over 600 degrees just cruising.

700 sounds high for cruising post turbo. Isn't that around 300 cooler than pre turbo? I don't hit 1000 with mine unless I'm gettin it. (Pre-turbo)

the probe is actually on the elbow right off the turbo. i think it seems high as well, i should have a 4 inch downpipe on the way. i was wanting to put a 10 plate in there but i ma worried about getting to hot, do i need to take the injectos down a little or what? i dont have the money for a bigger turbo right now. i think my timming is right about 14.5 maybe 15 do i need to jump up to 16.5 or so.

I wouldn't take drastic actions until you're sure it's actually running hot. For one, maybe your EGT gauge or probe is shot. Bumping the timing will only make things hotter. Higher cylinder pressures = hotter air. Actually, I just realized you said you have 370's in there. Yeah, that can make things hotter without a bigger turbo. Your temps are probably correct as long as you have a good quality gauge. I'd plug the hole in the elbow and put the probe pre-turbo. That's the only real way to get a more accurate reading.

I'd move the probe pre-turbo, to eliminate any guessing in the difference in temps. Then you will know if its getting hot or not.
