Driving around town in O/D?

I was just wondering what is better. I usully drive around with o/d off. I cruise about 1800-1900rpm at 45-60 mph. With the o/d on it is like 1100 rpm.

Whats better?

Hi Jambbii;
It's just a matter of personal preference in my opinon. I don't shut my od off as long as I'm not lugging it. If your driving empty (no load) and on fairly flat & level ground then to me there's no point in running higher rpm (using more fuel).
Just my opinon

Most of diesel tranny gurus will tell you if you want your trans to last the OD should be off at speeds less than 45-50 mph.

I was just curious to get opinions, I realize that it does put more stress on the tranny in o/d but I then there is the fuel mpg that goes down when driving at higher rpm. Seems like kind of a trade off to me.

If iam at or below 50 around town it is off, it saves the OD from premature wear. Goodluck,,,, Rick

I'm voting for the OD off in town. Since these are prone to lower line pressure at low rpm's why risk it even more. I can buy alot of fuel for the price of a tranny rebuild. Just my 2 cents worth.

I was always told to keep it off at speeds under 50mph. Allows the transmission to last a bit longer.

I never turn my od off except when I climb a steep hill with a heavy load

rebuilt the transmission the 1st time at 350,000 miles, the 2nd time 110,000 miles later (a sorry rebuild!!) and the other day at 245,000 miles.
