Do 1998 12Valve truck's throw codes???

O.K., I am getting better at this.....but still a newbie.

Heading up north tomorrow to check out a 1998 2wd Quand Cab 12 Valve truck with a friend tomorrow. I know that the 1998 model has an electronic odometer. Do these trucks respond to the key-on, key-off, key-on, key-off, key-on, key-off trick, and show "Codes' on the odo?

This truck has 94k miles and was used to tow a 36' fifth, with 3 sliders, washer dryer, the whole nine yards.

Truck looks great....owner seems honest and like a great guy.

Any suggestions regarding questions, things to look for???

You guys make this site a phenominal resource!!!!!

No, you need a scanner.

The oil leak at the front of the motor (possible KDP issue) front end looseness, steering, transmission, etc.

Nope, the 98 does not respond to the ken on/off method. I think 2000/01 was the first year for that, on the 24-valve engines. The 98 does have a computer (PCM) which controls the transmission and other systems, but not the engine. 12-valve engines are completelly mechanical, they do not need a computer to run, that's the nice thing about them. Any codes that your PCM throws are not related to engine management, and you need a scan tool to retrieve.

Heres the info on 12 valve codes. Some '97' s do throw codes that can be read via CEL blinking. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/tro..._DTC_codes.htm
