Difficulty level in rebuilding a differential?

Im pretty sure I have a differential that needs pinion and case bearings done, and in doing that, resetting the shims and the pinion depth. How hard is this to do? How much would a shop charge me?

This operation takes experience or one well versed in a dial indcator, and various special tools. If you are novice leave it to another. I have found in my area that the best value is a local transmission shop. Another good bet is an off-road specialty shop. They work on alot of rear-ends

if you have never done it before and it is a street driven (which i assume it is) i would leave it to the professionals
gear setting is not horrible but there is def a "right" setup

most shops around here charge 250 or so per axle w/o parts

I agree with derek's estimate on labor, but your parts bill may bite!! Check into a used axle, you may come out better if you are able to install.

If you get a used axle, you will not know what you have. Rebuild yours. If you make sure the shims that come out, go back in, you may have to remove the set once. It's just a lot of work.

If you can rebuild a motor you can do this, if you take your time. You'll need the proper tools. Take a look at Randy's ring and pinion website to get a cost estimate of what you'll need. You can get a dial indicator with magnetic base from Harbor freight for next to nothing. I believe Summit or Jegs carries the pinion depth tool and you're going to need access to a hydraulic press.
