Detonation

I have a popping like detonation if i rev it to around 2K. My new to me truck is a 98 12valve all stock. Where do i tap into the fuel system to add my gauge? What should the pressure be? What else could be my culprit? Injector stuck,Timing,Fuel pressure. I noticed when i bought this truck it doesnt smoke at all. (my 02 with a EZ seems to smoke more) It seems to fall on its face under acceleration.

the "detonation" you are talking about, is it like a miss or sputter for a few seconds when you free rev it, then once past that RPM it clears up and revs the rest of the way to redline?

Im not sure if it clears up. I didnt want to possibly do some damage ,so i just turned it off. I cant hear it doing this while driving ,But im assuming it is. The power seems to be off and on when accelerating. Cant hear any popping .And not a hint of smoke. Im thinking the timing must have slipped or i have a bad injector or 2. Sounds like a bad distributer cap or wires on a gasser under load.

so from what you can tell it doesn't do it driving just when you free rev it? it gets to about 2k rpm then pops and sputters?

If its what I think it is, sounds like a fuel problem. Mine did that until I replaced the rubber hose's that connects the metal fuel lines on the frame to the ones the injection pump and the fuel overflow valve on the return line. I also changed the fuel filter and pre filter screen at the same time. Did all that at the same time and cured the popping and gained a bunch of power.

I would say to pick up a fuel filter, pre filter, 12" of 3/8" fuel injection line, 18" of 5/16" fuel injection line and an overflow valve and replace them all. For the money its cheep insurance that all is ok, all this stuff is commom wear items for the 12V's. and it was a night and day difference when I did all that to mine

Fuel filter-fleetguard PN# FS19579----about $20
Fuel pre filter-fleetguard PN# 3845400-s----about $8
3/8' and 5/16" fuel injection line from Napa----about $15
Over flow valve----$35 + $7 shipping and handling
from Marty Tompkins at Precision Diesel Injection and Turbo Inc. 888-734-7349 or $55 from Piers

All that stuff should be taken care of anyway but if it doesn't fix the problem then maybe have your timing checked

Hope that helps...PM me if you have any other ?'s

I'd be very careful using fuel injection line, much of it isn't compatible with diesel and won't last even though the autoparts guys tell you it will. Only settle for diesel rated hose.

My feeling is your timing has slipped anyways.

I checked at a parts store for the pre filter. They didnt show it in there Wix book. Where is it located ? Also where is the best place to tap into my fuel system for my gauge?

Thanks Josh ,I saw that hanging up there and was pretty sure thats what it was. So im guess no one uses a fuel pressure gauge on these 12valves like i did on my 24V. I need to check my pressure i think the pump maybe leaking but i dont think there is any getting in the oil.

In general most people dont watch the fuel preasure on the 12v. It wouldnt be a bad idea to do it and save some cash on fuel filters. The lift pump will murder a gauge really quick if you dont run a needle valve. Do a search from posts by infidel on fuel preasure. He has gone into the setup several times.

Thats what i figured . I have some isspro gauges and will do the search.
I did find my problem ,Really makes me mad too. I noticed my fuel leaking somewhere around the fuel pump .Well with the key on it was leaking ,I knew something was wrong and it was. Someone didnt want to change the fuel pump so they put a cheapo autozone electric inline back by the tank. So im guessing only fuel pressure i have is about 15psi or less supplied by the electric.
