Dana 60 and Dana 80 Gear changes
I have a friend with a 94 12v 2500 5speed with a 4.10 ratio. He is Bombing his truck and wants to go to 3.54 ratio. Would someone please advise us on how and how much?
??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Thanks,
Meacham Evins
Re:Dana 60 and Dana 80 Gear changes
If you just take the truck a shop that's known for good axle work it'll run you about $650 for the parts plus labor which normally on any axle comes out to about $1,000 per axle when it comes to gear changes. Sometimes bearings need replaced or different carriers have to be used. It could very greatly depending on weather or not the same carrier can be used. (Which a 3.54 will not use the same carrier as a 4.10) so it'll prolly be more like $1,600 per axle. I'd just do it myself and get the chunks from a salvage truck in a junkyard.
It was $1,200.00 to have my Dana 80 rebuilt. That was using the old carrier. Just new ring & pinion + all new bearings/seals.

I did the gear swaps in my truck. From a 410 to the 354.
The carriers are different. Figure on two days to get it done.

The 410's are not that bad if he wants to drag race....they may be just fine as is.

Don~

Thanks guys! He is wanting to do some drag racing and he feels that the 3.54 would be better for that. He also does some light towing and would like to run lower rpm's on the interstate. I really appreciate the replies.

Meacham Evins

1k per axle? Where do you guys get your work done? I do Front & Rear's (F&R) all the time for roughly $750-850 an end and complete it in a day or much less. Wow, you guys are gettin beat up.

Make sure that you do the speedo as well. It also serves as an input to the ECU for the timing and fuel enrichment curves.

Man superduty12v, 1.2k to rebuild a DANA 80? Was there damage to the housing?

Two things to look at when considering a ratio change; tire diameter and cruise RPM. You can go too low in ratio and then it starts to effect other components longevity (mainly transmission). Just something to consider..........
