Cruise Control Questions
Cruise Control Questions
I have the issue on my truck where when I set the cruise it takes off going faster and faster. I was reading on dodgeram.org, a link I found from this forum. Here are a few quotes I have some questions about.
Speed control overshoots the set speed when engaged -
Review procedure. Repeatedly engaging the speed control with little or no throttle confuses the speed control to the point that it thinks there is extra slack in the throttle cables, so it "takes up the slack" resulting in overspeed. See TSB 08-16-95 Rev. A for procedure to "unlearn" the overshoot.
Here is the "unlearn" procedure link.

I think this might be my issue. I probably let off the throttle to engage cruise. Much cheaper then vacuum issue I read about. I have checked my vac lines everything seems normal. I am going to try the unlearn technique, just trying to figure out where I can go for a drive to reset it 10-15 times.
Can I just disconnect the batteries, turn on the key and drain the capacitors? Seems much easier then going for a drive. Comments, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Don't think disconnecting the batteries would work.
It would unlearn but not relearn.
I can't count how many times my batteries have been disconnected but have never had to teach my truck anything afterwards.
Funny I never had a problem with my cruise unlearning and overshooting the set speed because I drive all the time with my foot off the accelerator using only the cruise. I'll set it as slow as it goes, 37 mph, when going though a town but as soon as the open highway starts again I press the set button once for every 2 mph I want to speed up and it does it right on perfectly right up to 75 mph usually. Nice steady acceleration too, it doesn't just floor it.
Many times I'll push the set button 20 times or more to increase the speed.
Maybe I just lucked out and my cruise control is a smart one

Mine does the accelleration creap. More when its cold. When its below 0°C I have a problem where I set it at say 70 mph, it will slowly creep up and not start to pull back until it gets well over 80 mph! I have to cancel it off and reset about 3 times before it will hold speed.
And if I resume cruise from 50 mph with a 70 mph set point for a construction zone, it will floor it and then pull out right away and bark the turbo. Not to mention spin the tires.. Its so unpredictable, I DO NOT let anyone use cruise in my truck but me.

Check the amount of free play in the cruise servo cable where it connects to the throttle, there should be no more that 1/8 inch but there should be some. Failing that its the servo itself.
The process doesn't have to be done on the same day. Here is what I did. Drive up to the desired speed and hold it for awhile. Turn on and engage the CC, but do not take your foot off the throttle immediately, keep the speed constant if it starts to fall. If the truck starts to accelerate shut off the CC with the switch, not the brake pedal. Wait a minute or two, then repeat the procedure. After awhile, if you engage the CC the same way every time it will not accelerate. Also, turn off the CC with the switch when you are planning on shutting down, rather than leaving it on and turning it off with the key.
Reset procedure worked
I just got back from a 1500 mile trip. The reset procedure worked and the cruise held everytime I set it.
Between 9500 and 10000lbs, we averaged around 17.5 mpg's
Thanks for the help, and I hope this helps others.
