Crankshaft Damper
Hey gang
I have a 97 12 valve and was fixing a oil leak on the front seal and noticed that my crankshaft damper is bad. Uneven rubber sticking out and missing I guess the oil leak did this. Glad I found it now. The service manual says to mark the damper before removing it so that it will go back on the same way. I noticed 2 notches inthe damper is this what trigger the position sensor?
1) How do I install the new one in the right position ?
2) If my old one is bad and has slipped or moved how would I know this. If
this occured matching the position of the old one to the new would not
work.
3) I thought mine was a mechanical engine what does the crankshaft position
sensor trigger??? Fuel pump??? Tach ???
Thanks Kerry

Kerry, don't worry about position, it is neutral balanced. The notches are indeed to trigger the CPS.
Only thing the signal is used for is to tell the PCM the engine is running, and for the Tach. Without Tach signal you lose charging, AT control, Cruise, etc......

On a 12 valve the ESS (engine speed sensor) is often mistakenly called the CPS when it has nothing to do the crank position.
The 24 valves have a CPS is back by the starter and is used to change the timing with rpm.
