Cheapest way to stuff a Cummins in a Ford

I got my Powertoke out of my dorF today and pulled it all apart. One bad cylinder, ludicrously huge ridge, driver's side rear. I am trying to get a pre-Powertoke 7.3L to replace it with. Excessive complexity... Mucho dollar rebuild, don't think I'll rebuild it.

I love the body of the dorF though and wish I had the bucks and patience to do a Cummins swap. I don't think it would pay in the long run resale-wise versus finding some 7.3L for under a grand that's all ready to go...

There seems to be a fair amount of relatively cheap 12V Cummins around these day too though.

Whatcha think?

There's a complete running Dodge Cummins extended cab 1 ton 4x4, interior rough in need of an alternator in my area for 1800 and one for 1200 or 2500 together. The cheaper one is not running and has no bed or turbo, had new rings which had some problem afterwards but good for parts I suppose.

I just bought my entire duallie for 2600 and I am quite happy with it excepting the common Dodge problems that it has had.

There's bargains to be had out there if you look hard enough.

Real close to there actually.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal for the lot. He might take 2200.

Why do most people apparrently (correct me if I'm wrong) elect to get expensive adaptors and such instead of using the Dodge tranny when doing a Ford swap and doing some custom crossmember/driveshaft alteration instead? Not everyone thinks the world of the E4OD.

Probably to keep most original drivetrain parts in it. Easier to buy bolt on adapters than fabbing custom parts.

Yes, easier to buy expensive adapter plates if money is no object.

But then why swap in the first place.

Custom crossmember is very easy and can be done by anyone with basic cutting/welding/drilling skills.

Driveshaft alteration is usually not very expensive especially if shortening.

Adapters, adapters and more adapters, well, they are pricey.

Maybe it has something to do with the gauges too...?

I paid $750 for my P7100 6BT with 140K miles on it, so there are deals to be had. I ended up putting a head, turbo, injectors and manifold, on in a short time, but still had less than $2K in the engine. Fabrication on a swap is not too bad if you have basic cutting/welding skills. However, I would plan on spending at least $3K on a swap with half of that being the engine. If you are happy with a 1st gen. engine, you can do it for that. More than likely if you want a P7100 you will pay more.

I pulled my engine out of the Ford and got it all apart as well now. Yikes, not too good what I found inside: 1 wrong injector, 1 valve that touched a piston lightly, warped the exhaust manifold, made a huge ridge, cracked downpipe, turbo not bolted in properly, glow plug busted off... Rebuilding it is mighty pricey.

I found a whole International 7.3L turbo engine complete with everything plus an E4OD with standalone controller all bolted together and ready to drop in for $800 and picking it up on Friday.

Thought more about the time involved in a conversion and then when I looked at my credit card bill, well it was an easy choice to make. So for now I guess I'll have the Ford and the Dodge diesels both.

My god, I am going to have a lot of spare parts for my Ford.
