Can I burn used engine oil?
I saw the ATF thread and it reminded me of something I thought I read here a while back.
I thought I read that it is ok to put a gallon of used engine oil per tank of diesel. Am I remembering this correctly? If this is true I work on lots of cars and I have a good supply of used engine oil. Can I use 10W30 out of gas cars or shoudl I only use the 15W40 out of my truck? Please let me know what I can burn and not damage my truck.
BTW I would be nervous about ATF coloring my fuel red and getting busted for running off-highway diesel.
TIA,
Bob

When you say make sure it is clean what do you mean? What should I do to clean it? Do you get a lot of smoke when you burn used oil? Can I burn used 10W30 from gas cars?

I currently have 7.5 gallons of WMO in my 95. I added this to the tank as the needle went down from a full tank.
Only thing I notice is when its cold out and the truck is not warm yet is it smokes blue, "like its burning oil"

How clean does it have to be, what do you use to filter it. We change oil all the time around the farm and I always take it and recycle it but I would love to be able to recycle it in my tank.

I burnt alot of waste oil through my 175HP pump. Up to almost 50%. Problem is that it is a little thick in the winter and hazes a little easier in the cold. Over approx 30% will get you a haze at idle that goes away with turbo spool up. Also higher ratios net worse fuel milage but the fuel is free so what the difference.
By making sure the used oil is clean you are making sure that there is no particulates that will destroy the injection pump. The pump is highly precise tolerences. I used to burn alot of waste oil till I swapped in a 913 pump and would do it again. I used to strain the oil through paint strainers cause they are cheap. Alot of folks build filter setups but thats alot more work and money.

Cummins fuel bulletin
I was reading through my Cummins service bulletin #3379001-05 dated 1995 covering fuel specs.
Cummins makes a lube oil blender (part #3376317) for just such a purpose though it says not to exceed 5% used oil with fuel; which is just under 2 gallons per 35 gallon tank. The EPA also has a say in this concerning the amount of sulphur in the mixture; 500ppm. With this new ULSD fuel you shouldn't have any problems. Don't blend the WMO in one of the new motors.
As far as the oil being clean; if it coming out of an operable motor which isn't sludged up you should have clean/filtered oil coming out of the pan. What the oil filter doesn't catch your fuel filter will; may have to change your fuel filter more often. I've never used more than 5% and I'm curious about some of the rich mixtures I'm reading about. Hope this helps. sd

I ran 50/50 once. I double filtered all the oil through a fuel filter with a pump and then just dumped it into the tank. It smoked pretty good, but ran all the same. I have 370's and they haze at idle all the time so I didnt really notice a difference at idle but even when the turbo did spool it was hazy. If I had more access to used diesel oil to settle and filter I would run 25-30% mix.

Thanks for the help. As for the EPA sometime ill have to tell you were they can put it. Im also wondering is there any chance that oil could clog up the fuel system besides the filter? The last thing I want is my fuel gauge to go out.

On my 90 ferd IDI I used 70% wmo filtered to 2 microns before adding to the tank summer 50% winter for 30k miles with few problems, did have some starting trouble once when I went to 90% in the fall but just changed tanks to start then as soon as she was running back to the 90% tank till it was gone.

This sounds great. Why buy 2-stroke oil when you can just add WMO? I'm thinking of adding 1 gallon per full tank. So you guys are SURE this is OK right? I don't want to make irrational decisions just because diesel prices are so high now.
The only concern I have regarding WMO is its viscosity. I don't see how it's much different than vegetable oil and we're all scared of running that straight into the tank.

If you go much more than about 10% you will slowly carbon up your rings and coke your injectors which will cause scoring and loss of compression in the long run. Oil is much thicker than fuel. Fuel needs to meet certain viscosity specifications to burn completely and atomize. The problem is that when people try it it works so they think they can do it over the long run but I doubt it will be good for the engiene in the long run. Veggi oil will run too but has the same problems in the long run. Also getting you drain oil really clean is dificult not to mention all the additives in it.
