California EGR?

Goin to look at a 96 3500 that was bought in california so i assume it has the egr. It is a 5spd manual if that makes any difference. Does this still have the 215hp p7100 pump?
Anything else i need to watch out for?
thanks, Sean

Nope. If it has the California (CARB) emissions package with the EGR valve, then it has the 180hp pump, regardless of weather its an auto or manual trans. Actually I was even told that this California version of the 180 pump is not as good as the other 180 pumps used on Federal trucks. You know what the EGR stuff looks like right? Its a big tube that runs across the valve covers from the intake to the exhaust manifolds.

So if you want the 215 pump you need a 96-98, Federal, 5-Speed truck.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but can you buy and intall a 215 hp pump when and if the flabby 180 from a california truck wears out? Assuming (hypothetically of course) that the egr stuff has loong since been torn off and pitched?

I haven't done it, but yes you can, there's a few folks here that have replaced their 160/180 pumps with the 215 pump. The results are great, with the 215 pump, a no. 10 plate, and some 215 injectors, I think someone said their power increase was 100hp or so. However, this is not a cheap thing to do if you have to buy the 215 pump, $1200 for the pump + $1000 core charge, because you don't have a 215 core to return = $2200 +.

I talked with Mark at PDR, and he said for about $800 he can take a California 180 pump and "tune it up" to about 300-400hp. That seems to be the cheaper alternative.

My truck is a CA truck too - does that mean that I can't do any of the standard 12V mods like fuel plate, etc?

You can have all the fun you want. My truck has the 180 pump. I replaced the exhaust manifold with a 3-piece, and the intake with a stock 49-state unit off a truck that got a twinram, and went from there. With a #10 plate, intake, exhaust, and injectors, I dynoed at 400 hp. Seems ok to me. I still have the stock delivery valves (181). I don't see where you really need the 215 pump unless you are going for all out power, and then you will not want that with a 5 speed anyway, because it will not take that kind of abuse.

WildBill is right you can make all the mods you like to your 180 California pump. What Mark at PDR told me is that the California pumps need more tweaking than the Federal 180 pumps to produce the same amount of power. Both pumps can make some serious horsepower, the California pump just needs more help to do it. I wish I knew what the exact difference is between a Federal 180 pump and a California 180 pump, they are both rated by Bosch at 180hp, so I don't know what gives. But again, unless you're looking to get some serious power, you don't need the 215 pump.

Look at these sites, that's how I first learned that the 180 California pump was different, notice the listing of a standard 180 pump and a California 180 pump:
