A/C Compessor sqeeking

Started to get an intermitant belt sqeek this morning. Belt was nice and tight with a new belt an tensioner I installed last week.

At first I thought it might be an alternator bearing/bushing.

After checking it with a stethoscope, realized it was the A/C compressor making the racket.

Went to napa and bought the belt for trucks with no A/C for the time being. (The no A/C belt goes right on, just follow the routing diagram on the sticker under hood). This gets me out of a bind till the hot weather hits and maybe I'll save a few MPG's.

Anyone replaced the bearings in the A/C compressor?

Chances are its not the compressor bearing its only the clutch hub bearing. Simple to change and you don't have to discharge the AC system. As you will need a puller it might pay to have it changed at an AC place.

Any automotive air conditioning shop would have them in stock as they change them all the time.

Its just as cheap to have the compressor changed as it is to do the clutch.I had mine done back in summer and the gentleman who did it was the one who explained to me why. With the position of the compressor and how limited the space is to do the job most shops will remove the compressor to change the clutch anyway. If your going to that extent its easier to just replace the whole unit and have a all new piece instead of an old compressor and new clutch unit........Andy
