broken timing pin - how big of a deal?

Other than not being able to find TDC without lowering the 1st Intake & Exhaust valves to the piston, how big of a deal is it if the timing pin breaks off? I believe it is made of plastic. Could it damage the engine if the tip comes out of the hole in the cam gear? If it does fall out, it would either get chewed up by the gears and/or fall into the oil pan. It would then get picked up in the oil filter without any chances of it plugging up a oil hole, correct?

No worries,it is plastic.I have been lucky maybe but have had a few brought to me over the years and been able to remove the broken piece using a sharp pick.

You can still find TDC with the timing pin located on the side of the pump if the plastic pin on back breaks.
I find it easier to use anyway.
