broke turbo now what????

Hey I am fairly new to the turbo world but any who. I put a bigger tst turbine housing to get my exhaust temps down on my 98 12v but I guess I did not get it lined up just right any way worked good for two weeks and then boom. The main shaft that runs through the turbo broke off at inside the turbine housing. The fan that goes in the turbine housing is missing about half the blades all the way around. I had to drive .05 mile to get it home.

SO what now. is there metal in the engine? if so how do I get it out? is the turbine housing ruined to? Can i fix the turbo (probably not)? Where can I get a new one reasonably that is better?

Please help me

thks
bryan

Did it break the blades off on the exhaust side or the intake side? If it broke the ones on the exhaust side i'd say youre alright, they probably blew out with the exhaust. Now if its on the intake then Good luck. Im sure some more people that know a lot more than i do will chime in soon.

You can find used HX35's in the classifieds here, and there are usually some on ebay too. If you want a better turbo you could look at www.htturbo.com or get an HX35 and upgrade it.

Turbos are dynamically balanced to about 40,000 rpm or something - do you think a fix is going to hold together at that speed?

Broke turbine = scrap metal. Housing may need to be magnafluxed for cracks around the bearing and flanges if it grenaded that bad. Also will need to check for scoring of housing where blades hit. Easier to just get a replacement and hang the old one on the wall as a souveneir.

If the blades broke off on the intake side then you are looking at cleaning (if you are lucky) the intercooler, hoses and intake plenum or replacing them ($$$$$$).

Good luck.
