Question Brakes hard to push????

For some reason my brake pedal seems hard to push and the truck is harder to stop. This is only noticed when coming to a complete stop at a slow speed.(Example: crusing at 25mph, coast in N, appy brakes to stop sign). Something isnt right, ive put it off on past occasions blaming it on the fact im in N and the truck is at idle and it dosent have enough vaccum to help asisst the brakes. But today i almost hit someone not expecting the brakes to harder to press to stop. This has happened twice today and a few times over the past few months. I just put new calipers and pads upfront a month ago, rears are new, but questionalble adjusters and mabye some leftover mud from a previous mud incident(check my gallery ). Brakes show no sign of leakage, resevor is full. Any ideas? TIA -Jake

Jake, does your truck have vacuum assist? You should have hydraulic assist brakes. The vacuum assist was only used up to '96. Does your steering function properly? If it does, I would suspect that you might have some issues with the front brakes like the pistons are not getting the pressure required, or calipers not moving freely,or it could even be the master cylinder. You might even have some problems with the back brakes too. Did you flush the brakes when you put the new calipers on? there might be some sort of contamination in the system too. Hopefully someone else could chime it too.

I had the same problem. This is what cured it for me- buy new brakes, rotors, and discs. Just kidding!

Go on a non busy, PAVED road, take it to 70 or so and step on brake pedal as hard as you can. Pay attention, 'cause the ABS might kick in. Do this about 3 times. It seems to remove all the glaze/crap on the pads and rotors. Now I barely have to step on the brake at all to stop.
