throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
I though that I might be losing my TPS, so I hauled out the service manual to test it and they said to adjust the throttle linkage first. I found it was 4.25" instead of the 5" reference length the book says, so I adjusted it. Putting it back together and running it, I found I could only get about half throttle before the pedal gets hard to push.

I took the linkage back off and worked the throttle lever of the pump by hand (engine off). It moves a bit as if to take up some slack, and then gets pretty hard, then twist itharder and it overcomes the resistance and goes it's full travel.

Interestingly, though- when I started the truck up again after double checking all my adjustments, with the engine running and sitting in park, it seemed to free up and move smoothly when I revved it up all the way to about 3K (I don't have a gov spring kit yet!) -- But when I began driving down the street, it was the same deal- normal throttle till about 1/2 to 2/3 down, then real hard. If you ovecome it, it will go all the way down, and the truck pulls awesome.

The only thing I did today other then adjusting the linkage was to install me BHAF, but that couldn't have anything to do with it, right?

Re:throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
I don't think the BHAF has anything to do with it. Is there anything binding up on the inside? Any grease or anything that might be building up inside? You said there was some slack. Try taking out some of the slack.
Re:throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
I took out the slack and brought the adjustment to the spec in the DC factory service manual. I removed the linkage and traced the stiffness to the throttle lever going into the fuelpump. What ever is causing the problem, it must be inside the fuel pump.

I noticed today that I had two loose bolts on the AFC housing, must have been from when I installed a fuelplate two weeks ago. the housing wasn't loose at all, I just tightened down the bolts again. Like I said, it started just when I adjusted the linkage, but now the linkage doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

I made an appointment at Piers for the 15th of this month, but I sure would like to figure it out before then...
Re:throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
May I ask a dumb question ( Never worked on a 96 before)

Could it be that it's the kickdown valve in the tranny ?

AlpineRAM
Re:throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
AlpineRAM, I've learned that the ONLY dumb questions are the ones that DON'T get asked. I just wish the guys in our shop would learn this, it'd cost us a lot less $$$$ ;D
Re:throttle gets real hard to push past 2/3 down
I checked that - unfortunately it's in the pump. I disconnected the only linkage going to the pump, and turned the lever by hand - it's binding up 1/2 way down.
Piers says that the pump is supposed to do that when the engine is off- but not when running. hmmmmm..... I guess I'll have to be patient....
[undecided]
