Question Boost........

I've noticed on my boost gauge, that some times my boost pressure seems to come up in all gears, other times hardly at all around town. This is with the truck empty so I'm not pulling any extra power etc. It certainly "seems" to run better when the boost is more responsive, but this may just be imagined. Anyone had this anything like this happen?
Can someone with a similar truck give me the pressures they get at say 2000 rpm in the various gears (empty) so I can compare?
TIA,
Rick

If you're running at a steady speed you're not going to produce much if any boost as you aren't running much fuel through the engine. It's when you have a load on the engine that you should develop boost and that depends on several factors - how hard you're accelerating, what gear you're in, what kind of BOMBing you've done (although I see you appear to be stock), what gear you're in and if you're going uphill rather than down. I'm sure there are others too but I think these cover most of them. You're going to make the most boost when in higher gears on the open road and accelerating for several seconds. You can feel the boost and with a BHAF can hear it build too. Once you quit accelerating your boost will drop off quickly.

I'm kinda wondering about my boost too... In 4th and 5th gear at WOT I make 15 psi. That's with an empty truck on a flat highway. But the guy I bought the truck from told me it had a Banks turbo. So I don't know if I'm making as much boost as I should.

i dont think it has a BANKS TURBO

i have a powerpack kit and the turbo looks untouched, except for the wastegate... 15 PSI? seems kinda low I can peg my 30 psi gauge mercilessly..

Hmm... Yeah that's what I've heard. But is 15 psi at WOT normal for a stock turbo?

Well, I THINK my turbo is ok. Just towed my 17 1/2 foot Larsen boat back from the lake and no problems getting ~25 pounds of boost, so..........

Stock the waste gate is set around 14 - 16 psi.

Oh ok then... I guess that's a good thing and a bad thing. Good thing is that I'm glad there's nothing wrong with the truck. Bad thing is that the guy I bought the truck from lied to me about the Banks Turbo. It has a Banks exhaust, intake, and decals that come with the kit though...

However, there's always the possibility that it has a Banks turbo but it just isn't functioning properly. Could it be possible that the wastegate just got stuck open or something?

wcb, you should make a lot more than 15psi boost if you have the Bank's Power Pak in the truck. In fact you should be capable of 35 psi . The Bank's Power Pak and the Stinger Plus systems come with the "Big Head wastegate. This head is twice the size of a stock wastegate. The turbo housing doesn't look any differant than a stock housing but it is supposed to be a 14cm housing. Also the fuel plate should have been changed, look to see if the tamper proof screw is still there. The Power Pak has the Twin Ram intake which is certainly easily seen.
Hope this helps.
