Blow by

Ok just picked up a 96 that is in my sig. I checked for blow by before I bought it and it didn't have any. Today I got ou of the truckand seen alittle smoke so I checked the blow by under the truck and it had a little smoke comming out with a little oil that I could see had dripped out of it. Now the question is how big of a deal us it and what do I need to do about it? And should I hold off on grinding the fuel plate down? I called a shop today and they said that it's not all that bad and i could use loucas additive but will that fix the problem or will it just hide it. I'm not going to rebuild or replace the motor in it cause the truck isn't worth it.

Thanks for the input,

Hey Eric....Don't stress out over a little blowby(slight haze) and oil dripping out of the vent tube(a few drops)...This is very common on these 12V.My truck does the samething plus others with 12V have a little oil coming from the vent after a trip. Now if the truck was blowing a steady heavy stream of smoke and blowing oil like crazy....Then I would be concerned...If you like take a video of the smoke coming out off the pipe and we could tell you if its way to much...If its a haze its ok...

Ok, thanks for the input. I can't help but to stress out cause I have always been told that blow by is the end. I will take a vid tomorrow and try to post it. It is a little haze and a little bit of oil. Again thanks,

thanks,
Eric

So should I grind the fuel plate? The guy I got the truck from works for a diesel shop and he is going to do it for free.

If you do a search here...You will see all kinds of plate profiles, all depending on what you want to do with the truck...A few guys like the #10 plate for towing...Some like the 100 plate or the #8 plate etc...Its really your call. The zero plate is the one, a person could grind at home. This plate also gives full fuel starting at the bottom end all the way to the top...Its all in prefence by the driver...

Some blow by is normal. Just drive it you will be fine. If you want to mod it , go ahead. Infidel posted the monometer reading for normal blow by a couple weeks ago. If you are worried you can get a monometer and check it your self. If your truck starts good in cold weather your engine is fine. If you had a lot of blow by to the point of being a problem your comp. would be low and starting would be hard.

Not sure what a monometer is but my truck starts great, Its only been in the low 30's high 20's here but starts on the first crank.

How does the #0 plate do for towing? And how much smoke is it, I really don't want alot of smoke some is ok, but I don't want to smoke even when I am driving normal.

Thanks,
Eric

A few guys like the #10 plate for towing with 5-speeds.Seems to be just enough defueling to keep the EGT down...How big is the trailer are you going to be towing?I haved towed(18 foot car trailer) with a 0 plate but then I have the 175 pump.Maybe some of the other guys could chime in,that have 180 pumps and 5-speeds..What plates would they recommend??

A manometer is a tool that measures crankcase pressure.

I have a 30' goose that I haul hay on that would be the most that I haul and that can be up to about 18 to 20k lbs including the trailer, but I have my 04 that I do most of my hauling with. So the 96 wouldn't be pulling that much very often at all. Maybe one or twice a year and on short hauls. I do haul horses all the time but that's only like 5 or 6k so not very much at all. Also you have said 175 and 180 pumps before, I was told that it had the airdog 150 am I missing something. If so what and which one is better?

Thanks,
Eric

Now don't I feel like an idiot. So my truck has a 215hp pump? What hp does the truck come with?

Thanks,
Eric

Opps...My bad....You have a standard Trans....Yes it should have the 215 pump...But to confirm..Post your CPL number loacted on the front cover of the pump..(You will see a whole bunch of specs on this cover). The 215 pumps are really good and don't require as much mods as the 160 and 175 pumps...If its a 215 pump,I'm surprised your not getting heavy smoke with those LC....LC in a 215 will sure get the EGT up there also and are not really recommended for these pumps...Maybe to be safe, you should start with just moving the plate full forward for now.But the gauges should go in at that time...Sorry for the confusion on the pump...
