Question Bad sender???

Brother has a 98 12 valve and is doing some wiered stuff!! When at idle, cold and on an incline the oil gauge will go to 0 but then come back after a second or so, does this sound like the sending unit??? I searched back but did not find this symptom anywhere, but did find some close. I will get a gauge on so we can see tomorow but need some insight

Thanks,

Chris

How about when it's sitting level?

How is the oil level? Incline or not she should be picking up oil and creating pressure.

Common problem......very likely the sender. Parts location diagram:

Sounds like a loose wire connection. With key on pull wire off sender, guage should go either up or down, then ground the wire and guage should go oposite direction. If good clean the connection and reinstall. make sure it feels tight , if not gently crimp the connector to tighten. Also check the wire harness for dammage. If it still irrattic, most likely a sender is failing. It wouldn't hurt to put a mechanical guage on it to verify oil pressure if problem persists. Good luck

It can also be a PCM issue with the 98 12 valve, there is a TSB. Mine was doing the same thing except it would do it at any time. Computer reflash at dealer ($30) fixed the 98 12 valve I had.

Beware of generic auto parts senders, they don't last long.
You're better off spending more money just one time by buying one from Cummins.
