Autos worth looking at?

I have found quite a few 12 Valves within my price range, I am going to be looking at some of them, but my question is. Are the 94-96 Automatics even worth looking at? I have heard horror stories about the automatics, should I even consider an automatic or what do I need to do to keep the tranny intact? I dont plan on BOMBing, maybe an exhaust and turn up the fuel slightly.
Any help is appreciated

The Dodge 47RH/RE transmissions are really decent units. You could add a better TC and a VB and have a nice setup with the minor mods you mentioned.

94-95 was 47rh,96 on was 47re, both good units when set up right. depending on torque converters yes, they can be 800 dollars or even up to 16-1800. a valve body controls the where the fluid pressure is directed, thus controlling the shifting of the transmission.

No, not stamped on it, 94-95 are the RH, 96-2003 have the RE. The "H" means it is a hydraulic unit, the "E" means it is electrically controlled. You can get a nice single disc unit from Dave Goerend for about 650.00 or so. The VB is the Valve Body, which is "basically" the brains of the transmission.

Even with power mods up over 350 hp at 4k my stock RH went 212k before I replaced it with a complete Suncoast. Even then nothing was really wrong, I just happened to have the money and didn't want to tempt fate. It all depends on how you drive, personally I rarely smash down on the go pedal. Your disadvantage is that you don't know how the previous owner treated it.
Racers prefer the RH tranny over the RE.

Get it serviced (fluid and filter) and put synthetic fluid in it. If you have a light foot and don't tow heavy you should be OK.
