Automatic To Standard Converion
Hi all,
I've got a 1992 W250 CTD 1 ton with an Automatic transmission. This transmission has been nothing but trouble since about a year ago, and I've taken it to many reputable tranny shops with no results. My question is has anyone ever converted from an Automatic to a Standard? Looking at the truck underneath and in the engine room it looks like a fairly simple but timeconsuming procedure. Any help would be appreciated.
It'd take some time but can be done obviously. You'll need a donor or a lot of parts from one. tranny, clutch master cyl, clutch lever, hydraulic lines, clutch fork, throw out bearing, flywheel, shifter, ****, tranny crossmember and mount, clutch, and possibly a driveshaft shortening/lengthening depending on if the new tranny is shorter or longer.

You can pick up a NV5600 6-speed from a newer dodge for about $995.00 from Ariel Performance. That should make the rest of the swap easy on the wallet since most NV5600 go for about $3,400.00. Ariel's trannies are "used" (most of which are just check trannys thrown out for auction by NV that they used for spec calibration) All of them are dyno tested and "proven" to be in working order. I bought mine from Ariel and a couple of other people on this site have bought and installed Ariel 6-speeds. Mine works flawlessly. I love it. I took it apart when I got it and it looked like not a day had been seen on the gears. It shifts like a dream.
