Automatic to Standard tranny swap
Automatic to Standard tranny swap
I have a 94 Dodge Diesel with an auto tranny. I keep on havin problems with my tranny temp sensor and oil. I was wonderin how hard it would be to switch to a standard. Unless there is some way of preventing my problem. So far I siliconed the plug and oil still gets to it.
Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
a tranny swap to a manual is pretty complicated. If you have it done, expensive. Although sometime I wish to do the same. If you plan on tackleing this project, I would find a donar truck identical to yours with your planned tranny. This way you have both a reference and all of the parts you need.
Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
The swap is parts and labor intensive, but is pretty much plug and play as long as you find a donor truck or follow the repair manual. The 12 valve computer is pretty dumb, and as long as you use the clutch switch and install the proper jumpers on the PCM (they will be on the donor wiring harness where the TPS and transmission computer plugs hook), it will know the difference between an automatic and standard. The downside is that for way less money you can have a very good automatic from one of the quality performance builders that will end your troubles and leave you with money to go play.

I too want get rid of my auto. I do a lot of low speed hill climbs with a large load. The truck just turned 95,000 and two dodge rebuilts and the new one only has 3000 miles and is all ready acting up. The rebuilder in Oregon asured me that the only problem with mine was that it had been rebuilt by "Dodge".Well at least he was right about one thing his rebuild did get me home.
Any one know of a donner truck for a 95 one ton extended cab?

Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
I can tell you from experience that you can put the best beefed up automatic from the best builder around in your truck, and it will do what it's supposed too - SHIFT AUTOMATICALLY. But it will never put the power to the ground as directly and quickly as a manual with a decent clutch. If I knew that before I spent $4000 on my auto, I would have done the swap myself. Maybe I still will if anyone wants to buy a 10K old BD transmission package. There is a company in texas that sells all the parts needed in kit form to do the swap. Advanced transmissions or something like that.
Email me if you can't find it and I'll dig up the number.
They talk about it on their website and it sounded easy. The same company that sells the upgraded 5th gear shaft for the nv4500.

Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
If I were to switch to an ATS tranny or DTT would I still have to mess with the sensor. Also does anybody know where I might find the plug at for the sensor. Dealership says I would have to buy the 800.00 harness to get the plug.
Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
I too am undecided about transmissions....have a 6 speed but would love an auto....but havent driven an upgraded auto and am not sure I want to spend that kind of money on a tranny that isnt as good and the stick.
Anyway, check out these sites:

www.standardtransmission.com

Good luck with it.

Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
Lil Red, I can't believe that you are having all that trouble with that sensor. Can't you just take it out and replace it with a plug in the line and a resistor in the wiring? I don't know what the resistance is, but someone here must know.

Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
Rebuilt the automatic in mine with a lot of help from DTT. Thought I had it whipped,"man this way too easy",Boy was I wrong! Got the trans all done and then started having sensor trouble and solenoid trouble and this part don't agree with that part, AAAAHHH! Finally, after all summer of messing with it I wouldn't give up my auto for anything. Test drove an 03 a couple weeks ago and it was a 6shooter, it's nice but I like the automatic. Maybe you could find someone to trade?
Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
Well I found a 92 4x4 one ton none "dulle". I'am sure it has the "get rag" 5 speed but I figure I can swap it out for the 6 speed.
Is there any one out there that can tell me which Parts won't fit my 95? I assume I will have to modify the cross member but what about the slave cilinder mechinism, bell, transfer case ect. Our 12 valves don't have muich of a computer so I'am not to worried about that aspeck. Any input would be very helpfull as I really don't want to keep the auto.

Just curious,
Why you are interested in switching from the 6 spd. tranny to an automatic?

Re:Automatic to Standard tranny swap
Because the shifting a real pain - the 5 speed aint bad but the 6 leaves a lot to be desired.
Im not considering a swap - would be cheaper and much easier just to get a new truck.

Can you share some specific problems related to shifting with the 6 spd. tranny? I am trying to decide to order my new truck with the auto or switch to the 6 spd. tranny. Thanks again
