Auto Trans Problems

Hi.
The guy who lives across the street from me has just picked up a 1996 12v 4x4 auto. Low miles. Not sure of exact amount though.

Anyhow...while driving, the tranny feels like it shifts half-way between, back and forth through the gears. Also, it likes to hold 2nd gear every other pass through the gears. He can get it to shift into 3rd by manually shifting from Drive to 2nd then back to Drive, then itll go in.

Checked the fluid and its full, right on the line.

The oil does smell burnt though.

Hes had it in and out of the shop about 6 times in the 2 weeks hes had it and he feels that they mechanics at the place he bought it at are just Jerry-riggin' it to last about 30miles then the problem starts again.

So what do ya'll think it is?

Should he get the tranny repaired, rebuilt, or replaced?

If you feel he needs to just replace it with something better(built for better towing/performance) whats the best auto trans for the price?

Any help will be great.
Hes getting hooked by that Cummins bug we all got, just trying to keep him hooked

If the fluid is burned, it only a matter of time----If not, I would check the band adjustment to start with, and also the shifter adjustment. Then you might need a governor pressure solenoid and regulator.

hi
i would get a transgo vb kit and install it with a new filter and fluid change ,

i use the wallmart +4 and like it .

also check band adj for both bands at this time !

this should help !

also check the tps function and setting , a bad tps = trouble !

do a tps reset .

if your clutches and convertor are good it should shift great when done .

1.) Change fluid, filter and do a band adjustment.

2.) Drive the thing, see if it shifts normally with a certain amount of throttle and not at other throttle positions. Mine was pulling that at very light throttle, but would be OK under more spirited acceleration.

I went through all the cheap stuff first, cleaning grounds, wrapping the alt. wire, etc. Had to bite the bullet and buy a TPS, 155 and change at my friendly dealer......but only after I showed him I could buy it online for 166.

All is good now!

I would avoid that kit, if you don't want to buy a VB, go buy the Ton Garcin VB kit. Tony is Dunrite trannies. Or call Dave G. The transgo kit has been known to cause bindup.
