auto trans case cracked ?
auto trans case cracked ?
I think my parking paw has cracked my case ?
The other day I noticed a ratcheting sound under acceleration , got under to look around and saw a crack just ahead of the transfercase mount flange .
I am looking for options , like a good used rear case , someone set up to weld in my area ?
I haven't had one of these apart in many yrs. , so not sure if the rear case can be removed , after dropping the tranfercase with out dropping trans , working on parking apron , no lift ?
Any info is helpful , can not afford to rebuild at this time .
Thanks John

I'm thinking you probably could just change out the O/D case if needed, but pulling the whole tranny out is only one more step at that point and would probably save you a bunch of aggravation.

Work has been real slow and now the last couple weeks a few jobs have come up , so its a get it working as quickly & cheaply as possible for now , so that I do not miss any of these 1 - 2 days jobs .
Any one else know if the RH & RE parts / cases will swap ?
Thanks John

You can pull the OD section off with the trans in place, I've never done it, but it can be done. You'll need a new gasket for the OD to main case interface.
The RH and RE cases are different, the RH has a hydraulic governor, the RE does not. You can use any OD case from a hydraulic controlled trans, A518 to 47RH.
Part wise the primary difference between the two is the output shaft.
When you swap cases its important that you have the measurements for the two selectable spacers checked and adjusted if necessary. One is on the intermediate shaft and the other is under the thrust bearing on the OD apply piston.

JD730 , thanks for the info .
I would guess [ and we know what that can get us ] the only way to check spacers gap is from the bell housing end , I have built a few auto & manual trans. Ford / Chevy etc. and remember that measuring was done at the input shaft .
Its been at least 10 -15 yrs .
Thanks again

Actually there's a set of measurements that are specific to the OD unit itself. The shim under the apply bearing is critical for 3rd to 4th shift timing. The spacer on the shaft more for overall unit endplay, that would be checked from the bellhousing end, but you want to make sure the spacer you have now is within range for new OD section you'll be putting on. There's a good chance you won't have to change the spacers.
Thanks for the replies , gathering good info to try to get this up & going again .
I knew I should have started gathering spare parts for future rebuild , but now the truck is beatup & rusty so was starting to think about next truck , but that isn't going to happen anytime soon .
Life is what happens , while your making plans

I've picked up a complete OD unit , it was part of a rebuilt trans that there costumer burned up the trans but OD is good .
I paid $200 including shipping .
I took a look inside the 1st of clutches , they still had the printing on the clutch surface , look clean inside .
Now the question is , I need to find , barrow , buy a intermediate shaft to aline the OD section for easy install .
I could use one that is damaged on the front end , but need good end into OD .
Also want to measure the end play at front of OD unit , to make sure all is good before putting in , any suggestions welcome .
I am attempting to just R&R the OD out of truck , without removing trans , except for taking down pan & replacing filter and of course , disconnect parking linkage ?
Thanks
