Is auto tranny shifting normal?

When I floor my truck, I go through the first two gears, then when it is supposed to go into the next gear it does not. It just hangs there at 3000rpm's. It will shift only if I let off the throttle a bit. Why will it not shift into the next gear when it is floored? Any ideas?

I don't know. I don't floor my truck because it performs just as well at part throttle, with much less smoke and better economy.

Thinking back to the 60s and 70s, and our transmission was designed back then, with a properly adjusted shift linkage doesn't flooring it result in a downshift signal? Now you want it to upshift while telling it to downshift?

My truck does EXACTLY the same thing!! I have tried adjusting the throttle linkage, the TV cable, the TPS, installing a 3K GSK and adjusting the bands. None of it fixed the problem. Now I am used to it so I just let up a bit on the throttle when I want it to shift into 3rd. If you find a fix let me know what is was so I can do the same.

Sidewinder, is yours a stock VB?
izzwardo, who built the VB? 12V's will do this, if the VB isn't setup right for the motor.

How aggresive is your kickdown cable? What RPM is your 1-2 shift?

Aamco rebuilt it. It is there "heavy duty" vb & tc. If that means anything. I told them to build it as heavy duty as they can.

I'm running into the same problem with a trans i rebuilt and put a shift kit in it. followed directions exactly except one spot. I turn the line pressure up 5 turns instead of 4. which i'm thinking is whats causing it. I talked to acouple of people and got 3 different answers. One answer, TV Cable is to tight causing your throttle pressure to be to high and you can't over come it with gov. pressure, or your line pressure is to high causing your tv pressure to be to high and gov pressure can't over come it. Or your gov speed sensor is bad. I'm going to try adjusting the tv cable loose but still have good shifting, if that doesn't do it i'm going to back my line pressure off to 4 turns instead of 5. I bet if the tv cable doesn't do it if you turn your line pressure down it will fix it. This is on a 98 12v. And the shift kit was for the trans also. If you don't figure it out I'm going to be working on it in a couple of weeks i'll let you know what i find out.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Generally, shorten the throttle cable would be the suggested fix.
The 95 and earlier have a real governor. It might be benefical to hook pressure gauge to gov pres port on right rear of tranny. If pressure goes up so far and stops about time should upshift, a gov failure is suspected. A small flat washer between E clip and gov weight on gov assembly. This would shorten rod and allow longer build of pressure.

I have a 96 auto that hangs in 2nd unless letting up on the throttle. Doesn't have to be floored for this to happen. It isn't repeatable but very annoying. Lot's of posts on here about that being a symptom of a bad TPS. Installed a new TPS but still have the same problem.
I was told by a dodge tranny guy today that it likely is a leaking seal on the 3rd gear clutch pack. Truck is stock with 290,000 km on it.

Mine did that until recently,I changed everything. Then i bought a new tranny.I hope it works out for you,but mine got progressively worse and worse until it would not shift into 3rd at all, then eventually not into 2nd.Everything was worn out and some parts destroyed when they took it apart, its a miracle the truck even moved at all.Anyways what you are desribing was the beginning of the end for my tranny.

Mine has been doing this on rare occasions for the past 100K. It is going in next week for the teardown and repair.
What do you mean "replaced everything and then bought a new tranny" I only want to do it once.

That's what i thought you meant. My truck belonged to my father in law before me and he tells me it had the same problem before and was a warranty repair, 3rd gear clutch pack seal. Now that it is coming out the tranny guy said I should consider replacing the converter and he will give me some options. I have read the stock unit is not efficient. Any suggestions?

yep ,pretty much anything the tranny guy doesnt suggest. Not to speak badly of him,but if he doesnt do alot of diesels then what does he know about good torque converters?Go with a converter designed by a diesel shop, dtt goerend, suncoast,bd etc.

i have had this problem 3-4 (cant remember) times now. every time it was the pressure silinoid in the transmision. one of the times it was a transducer and a silinoid. i called dtt and they tell me it my pcm eating them. they say that they have experianced the same thing and there is a short in the pcm somewere and it slowly shorts out the silinoid.
