Anybody else notice their truck smoking more?

I noticed the other day that my truck was smoking more. Anyone else notice this? At idle if I blipped the throttle up to 1500 or so and let off out would huff a big thick black cloud. A healthy haze of black at 7-8 PSI through out the RPM band that cleans up with more boost. Boost numbers are spot on as usual with max at over 30 PSI. My truck even knocked out 19.5 MPG last tank with almost all intown driving! No tweaking has been done to the truck in a couple of months other than maintanence. I wonder if its the new fuel? I backed the star wheel up about 2/3rds of the way just to clean things up a little. Still need to double check the timing. Just an observation while driving to work lately. Any others?

244,840 and counting. Actually over 250K as the speedo has been off for atleast 2 sets of tires. I dont think that it is a problem but just different fuel. I tend to tinker with things alot so I pay close attention to my truck.

Interesting thread. I've noticed a different sort of smoke, a nice light haze while warmed up at idle while standing behind the truck. I rarely, if ever have the black clouds or puffs others here talk about. No mods, however it may be getting close to a rebuild....

96_12V it may be time to have your injectors cleaned. They get pretty nasty over time and the carbon build up can reak havoc on the spray angle.

Think maybe you could have a slight boost leak? When did you make your last change...in the winter??

If you made a change on winter fuel, but had a boost leak (or other small issue) when they went back to summer fuel you could notice more smoke There is more "power" in summer fuel!

Just a thought, I doubt it's anything, really!

My truck is the absolute smokiest street driven truck I have ever seen. I wouldn't be able to tell if it hazed a little more at idle. I may actually put a set of stock 215 injectors back in for a while to control some of the smoke.

I have noticed in the last 1-2 weeks that mine is smoking way more than normal. I have not made any changes in the last month or 2 that would warrant such smoke. I havent gotten a chance to check my timing but my boost numbers have not changed.

I was planning on checking timing and then adusting the star wheel and afc housing to try and clear some of it up. Its pretty bad while driving around town. I havent noticed a real drop in MPG, just a difference of .5 - .75 lower than the last couple of tanks.

Last mod has been awhile back and that was a turbo. The fuel plate and injectors have been the same for probably 6 months. I will have to check for a boost leak. Every once and awhile I do have to retighten the intercooler clamps. never leaked but you can see where the clamps have moved a little.

Glad to see that I am not the only one seeing more smoke lately.
Frosty I missed your post earlier. I also havent had a chance to check the timing but I backed up the star wheeel. It cleaned it up a fair amount. If I hit the throttle hard enough to make 7-8 PSI of boost she smokes pretty bad Still. More boost than that and she runs clean.
When I had my injectors cleaned I took them to an injection shop. They cleaned them up and pop tested them for me.

well my truck has been puking the smoke out, al mods you see in my thread
if i get on it real hard and stay on it the smooke doesnt clear up even at about 25 psi of boost!! After it warms i the moring and i take off i leave a slight haze running at about 1500 rpms. Then once i get to work 10 minutes up the road at idle i get a small haze constantly coming out. So yes i have lots more smoke latley...

Ramdriver I think that you would like the hybrid turbo. I used to billow black with the 6 plate on the stock turbo. Now it will clean up to a haze at WOT. Till I noticed this black smoke lately, the hybrid had my exhaust as a haze unless I went around a corner in 4th gear at 30 MPH. Then I would have smoke. Ofcourse not having an AFC might have a little to do with your trucks smoke.

haha true true but ti never was like like that before. i couldnt get it to smoke like this. I took out the afc about 2 months ago and this started like last week... it was unexpected but i like it!! lol **** of those massholes.
about the turbo, i almost bought an hx 40 but i was told the shaft is too week for the turbo so i held off... I really want a new turbo but im saving to take care of my tranny right now, my pyro never goes about 1100 and it only goes above 900 when im ****** offf beyond control , si i think i should be fine for now...

Where is your pyro mounted? If it is preturbo I would start looking for a fueling problem. I could easily get above that with a 10 plate. If you havent done so check the fuel heater screen. Mine was pretty gunked up. The kit is only a couple of bucks.
If you can get by without the truck for a while you can send in the turbo and have it modded for a couple hundred bucks. At your fueling level it would work sweet. The HX40 shaft is the same size as the HX35. The wheel is a little larger so there is a little more stress on it. As long as you arnt barking the turbo it should last just fine.
