Another Steering Question
i have a 96 3500 4x2 and my truck wanders on the road.... i've heard of the death wobble but i believe this only applies to 4x4 trucks... my truck has independant front suspension. i took it to an alignment shop and let them drive it and look it over. they said my ball joints were toast ( less than 1 year old Advance Auto Parts crap) so i installed new Moog upper and lowers and took it back for the alignment... alignment was way out of wack but is now straight as the tires don't wear improperly.... but the steering still has some slop and wanders on me..... i let him drive it after he aligned it and he said it might be the tires sidewalls flexing (Geo Sport 235/85-16 less than 1000 miles on them) so i get my friend i ordered them through to order me 6 Maxxis Commercial also in 235/85-16 tires as they have a WAY stiffer sidewall and this corrected it some..... the old tires were Bronco allterrains also 235/85's and i didn't notice this problem as bad with them.... they were more of a squared up tread and these last 2 sets were more of a rounded/ crowned tread..... now i don't know if it's the tires or in the steering box.... i do know there is some play in the steering wheel as i can move the steering wheel maybe 1/16-1/8 turn and not see the tires move... or could it be the stabilizer as i've pulled it loose and has good tension pushing or pulling on it.... it is real bad when i'm on a really rough road or if i hit a rough transition from a smooth road..... thanks for any imput....
Have someone wobble the steering wheel back and forth, while you look things over. Look at the steering input shaft on the top side, the output shaft underneath, the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame, and the track bar. The shop should have checked all the steering components, but look them over anyway. You might need the DSS http://www.solidsteel.ca/
Try adjusting (tighening) the steering box. It's the nut & allen screw thing on top of the steering box. Loosen the nut, tighen the allen screw to the right about 45 degrees at a time, no more. Tighen nut and road test.
Worked for me. 200K miles now, and I've had to adjust it twice.
